Munch, a food-rescuing startup, was founded in 2020 by four university students Bence, Kirill, Botond Zsoldos and Albert Wettstein. The concept behind the Munch app is to allow users to reserve leftover food from restaurants, bakeries, and confectioneries that would otherwise end up in the trash because they weren’t sold that day and can’t be sold the next day. The app offers users significant discounts on these food items. This initiative provides a solution to the issue of food waste, helps food retailers and producers to reduce their losses, addressing the paradox of excess food production in a world where many still go hungry.
Since 2020, Munch has come a long way –it has become a leading company fighting against food waste in the CEE, with a presence in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Munch has partnered with several major retail chains, and customers of SPAR, INTERSPAR, and PENNY can save food using the app. In total, it is possible to take action against waste in more than 3000 stores with the help of Munch. They have helped save over 1 million packages from being wasted, and they have high ambitions for expansion beyond the CEE region.
